In anticipation of Nina Simone’s first European tour in June, I use all of the money I earn working at a record shop on Saturdays to buy every US imported LP by Nina! As the founder of her UK appreciation society, I have to have all of her albums before we meet! Her 1st Bethlehem LP includes her 1959 hit ‘I Love You Porgy’ as well as ‘My Baby Just Cares For Me’ a track that would be the subject of funny/not-so-funny incident in 1967 when Nina performs at the Ram Jam club in Brixton – more to tell about that later!
This beautiful rare performance of her very first hit recording is a wonderful reflection of Nina in her early years….
